FIGHTING MS
We are raising money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in hopes of finding a cure and bringing more awareness to this disease that affects about 1 out of every 1,000 people worldwide
This is important to me and my family because my wife Lucy has MS. She was diagnosed in January 2006, and is currently on medication and learning how to deal with and control the disease. Finding a cure would bring a lot of relief and comfort to the millions of people who live with MS.

Lucy was a competitive swimmer through college and a marathoner after her swimming career ended. She is currently a swim coach for Lakewood Aquatics, and is still active and involved in sports and fitness, and even did the swim leg last September in a team triathlon in Long Beach.

Thank you for your contribution on behalf of my wife and all of those with MS. Jonathan Moore, Walt’s Wharf Manager

MS is an autoimmune disease that affects the Central Nervous System. The CNS consists of the brain, spinal cord & optics nerves.

Surrounding the nerve fibers in the CNS is myelin (a fatty tissue which covers and helps protect nerve fibers). In MS, myelin is lost in multiple areas, leaving scar tissue called sclerosis.

Myelin not only protects the nerve fibers, it also allows the brain to communicate with your body. When MS strikes, it causes interruptions and difficulties in that communication process, resulting in any of the many symptoms of MS.

MS is not contagious and is not directly inherited.
Most people with MS have a normal or near-normal life expectancy.
The majority of people with MS do not become severely disabled.

Medication is available and is helpful in slowing down the progression and the severity of the disease, and some believe that a cure may be attainable in the near future.
